Baseball: Races and Countries Coming Together
Baseball and different ethnic races is a great way for me to teach Social Studies. With the use of the bulletin board we will be discussing many different topics in baseball and Social Studies. Every year we track the Minnesota Twins the teams they play, the players that play for that team, the region the team they are playing is located, the capital of that state, biggest city in that state, climate of the opponents state, landforms, and natural resources of the particular region. The bulletin board will help in the discussion of the players that play on the teams the Twins are playing. With that we can develop a discussion on where these players came from, what types of things the students believe the player over came to become a major league baseball player in the United States.
Anytime we can cross curriculums it pays off a great deal. We will also use this bulletin board in Reading. Reading a book called Teammates about Jackie Robinson; the students will come up with a number of themes for this book. We have a class discussion on the themes they come up with and the things he went through to play major league baseball. With our bulletin board we could have a discussion on what things players today from different countries and cultures go through. After completing the themes book we also have a book that we read out of and discuss Baseball in Every Country this book gives true life stories from players today. Talking about life in the countries they came from discussing issue they have over come in America. This reading influence gives real life application to students on equality in baseball from different cultures and races.
The idea of a bulletin board gives me as the teacher a wonderful way to tie in character things like equality into the classroom. It also allows me to go deeper into different subject areas.
