Artifact 1 Principal's Meeting Artifact 2 School Discipline Common Core Curriculum Training

Being committed to professional growth as an educator is not an option. The educational world is changing and evolving all the time. Administrators need to be growing professionally as education changes. In my short time as an educator, I have seen how things change and then change again. Being an educator that changes with the times and accepts these changes is crucial. For an administrator, it is even more critical to continue in your professional growth, as your entire staff of teachers is dependent upon you and your knowledge to keep your school a successful place to learn and grow. Artifact 1: This past January I had the privilege of attending a principal's meeting in Sioux Falls with my internship mentor and principal. We attended the South Dakota Associated Elementary School Principals meeting. We discussed a wide variety of issues mainly dealing with the up coming state senate bills and voting. We also discussed how schools and administrators were going to work the transition from state standards to implementation of the common core standards. This meeting was very informative and a collaborative time for principals to gain information about pressing issues as well as share ideas and how different things have worked or not worked in their schools. Being involved and joining a group similar to this one would be important for principals to be a part of. Artifact 2: My internship mentor and principal had to have an operation that forced her to miss about three weeks of school. She asked since I had done my internship with her if I would take on a few duties in her absence. One of these duties was to address and handle different disciplinary issues that may arise while she was out. This was a great way to see some of the different issues that a principal deals with on a daily basis. As a teacher, when you are having difficulties or when you are not coming to a resolution with a problem, you send the student to the principal. In this case, I had nowhere to send them. Instead, I found ways to resolve the problem and come to a solution for the issues at hand. Being in the classroom while doing this had its challenges at times, but also had its advantages. Artifact 3: With our state adopting the common core standards set by our national department of education. There will be a transition time for schools. Schools and teachers will have questions in regards to this transition. I have signed up to attend a number of different training sessions for the transition to teaching from the common core. I will be able to facilitate my administrators in getting our school proper training in these new standards by attending these sessions. I will also be an aide for fellow teachers when they have questions about these new required teaching standards. By doing these different seminars, I will be able to help my school successfully adopt the common core standards and the different testing that will be involved with them.
