The vision of a school and district is a vital piece of information for administration, faculty, and the community to be aware of. This vision should be kept in mind when planning all activities throughout a school year. This vision should give a set goal that all school faculty members need to work towards. Administration and faculty can align their educational curriculum toward this goal. All schools also need the support and involvement of the community to be successful. Schools can get resources and support much easier by having community support and involvement.

Artifact 1:

As an administrator it is important to recognize the accomplishments of both students and teachers. During my internship I was able to hold our school’s Flyer Day. This day is a celebration that takes place at the end of each quarter. We recognize students and teachers in a variety of different areas. I was able to hand out fourth and fifth grade academic awards to those who had earned that quarter’s awards. We recognized students that had met their goal in our SuccessMaker programs in both reading and math. I was also able to recognize the students that received attendance awards. We honored both perfect and outstanding attendance. Flyer Day also has a talent show. Students in all elementary grades are able to show off any of their talents that they so wish. These types of events are valuable to celebrate the importance of all aspects of educating kids and to give recognition to their works.

Artifact 2:

“Cooperatively preparing students to succeed as lifelong learners in an ever changing world,” is the mission statement of the Chester Area School District. During my internship, I was able to work with my principal to look at our school district’s vision and mission statement. We worked closely at investigating what this statement really means for our students, teachers, and community and how do we make sure these things happen. This statement is something that our administration works towards throughout the school year, and leads teachers and students toward as the school year progresses. As administrators they develop and schedule different in-service events for teachers in a way that aligns with this mission. Continuously looking at the school’s mission statement and vision ensures that all educational activities that are done working toward this written goal.

Artifact 3:

Having an instructional plan for different aspects of staff development is very important. It allows you as an administrator to assess the different needs of your staff and to develop a plan to effectively meet those needs. My instructional plan was developed to help teach staff members how to use the new iPad 2 devices that they received. This comprehensive plan ensured what was going to be taught, who would teach it, who needed to attend the training, and what it was going to cost the school to do so. My plan outlined the different expectations for each of the mentioned parts. Along with all the structured parts of my plan there are prerequisites that the staff will be responsible for. Having experience making and using this instructional plan will help me as an administrator a great deal; it gives me a plan to help guide staff in meeting different needs they will have.

Artifact 4:

My principal believes that policies are a good thing to have in place when needed but are something that allows for no grey area. When it comes to the use of school technology equipment a policy is needed to protect the school and students that are using these powerful machines. After a powerful observation day at another school, I was able to work with my principal, elementary parent council, and school board to find a way to fund twenty five new iPad 2 devices to make it possible for both fourth and fifth grade classes to become a one to one environment. After convincing these groups to fund this new proposal we had to construct a policy handbook to have guidelines for students, parent, and teachers to follow and live by when using these devices. My principal and I met with our technology coordinator and got the policy handbook that the school uses for one to one computing in the high school. We took components of that policy and made it fit into the needs of the elementary. As a group we had to consider the legal aspects for the school, the needs of teachers and students, and the capabilities of the devices when writing this handbook. This was a very valuable aspect of my internship. It open my eyes to the different components that a school needs to consider when constructing policies. This activities also allowed me to see how a policies need to be written, constructed, and enforced.
