As an administrator it is important to understand the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context of your school. Having a handle on all of these areas is vital to the well being of your school. Each area is important for its own reason and needs to be addressed and dealt with in the same manner. The political, social, economical, legal, and cultural contexts of your school are characteristics that make up your school and the feel that it gives. Each component has special circumstances that surround them and affect school in their own manner. Administrators have to be aware of their school and how the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural components affect their school.

Artifact 1:

The school budget and planning project was important for me to be part of. As a teacher you see and are involved in many aspects of the school. I was not familiar with the business side of education and how schools are planned for financially. During this project, I learned the different areas that budgetary items come from and are allocated from. The areas of capital outlay and general fund were the areas that this project addressed. The school budget and planning meeting project had great value for me and my personal growth. As an administrator being in-charge of and managing a budget is crucial to your school’s success and ability to obtain resources for your staff and students.

Artifact 2:

I interviewed our superintendent for artifact 2 in regards to the district's busing budget. The cost of fuel alone has made a four day week a necessity in some school districts in our state. There are many aspects of a busing budget that I didn't really think about until doing this interview. The maintenance of school vehicles other than busses is an area that I was unaware of, as well as some of the legal stipulations that are placed on schools for busing. Also, being aware of busing requirements, filling busing positions, and busing policies is important to be aware of. This project was another that had great value. It offered another eye opening aspect that as a teacher you don’t look at.

Artifact 3:

The social well being of students is an important factor for administrators to consider when looking at the entire scope of students. I took a look at the various activities that are offered either through our school or programs that are run by outside groups. There are a great deal of activities that students at Chester can be involved in. As our students get into the intermediate elementary grades the possibilities grow even further. These various activities, either funded by the school or outside groups, give all students the opportunity to belong to something and find their niche. Like all activities that happen during a school year it is vital for the administration to be aware of all the possible activities and how they affect the school. It is also important to be aware of the possible activities, that way when an issue arises, administration is informed and able to handle the issue.
