Test Scores

It is vital in today’s educational landscape to promote the success of students through collaboration and investigating the needs of our schools and students. In order for schools and communities to work together there has to be open communication and collaboration amongst the two. There are a number of ways that schools and communities work together. Schools need to work in a number of methods to gain the resources needed to fulfill the needs and interests of the community. Schools need to work diligently to keep open lines of communication, grasp resources that are available in their communities, and work to meet the needs of a diverse group of people.

Artifact 1:

Artifact one is a marketing research plan. I was required to construct a plan that would improve our school and community. The need for a new gymnasium at our school is an ever growing need. As an administrator, there will be countless times that you are required to expand and develop a plan for your school to gain resources. This project also had the community aspect to look at for payment and community perceptions of a project like this. There was great value in this project, the school can’t work without the positive involvement of the community. Knowing how to get the community involved in a positive manner will be valuable to many things in the future.

Artifact 2:

During my internship, I had the privilege of filling in for my principal while she was out after a procedure. One thing that we do at Chester is a monthly newsletter. I worked on the newsletter cover page. This newsletter informs the community, parents, and staff of many happenings and upcoming events that the students are involved in. Producing an attractive cover for the newsletter is important. The newsletter also gives an opportunity for the school to show some of the extra events that are taking place in our school.

Artifact 3:

Artifact three is a project that I did during my principalship class. This project was to evaluate the Dakota Step test scores. I evaluated the test scores in the areas of reading, math, and science. For third and fourth grade, I looked at both math and reading and for fifth grade I evaluated math, reading, and science. After getting the scores I looked at the raw score cut offs between below basic, basic, proficient, and advanced for all areas. Students were grouped according to those cut off scores. I looked at students that were on the bubble between the high end basic and low end proficient. Students that were ten points either way of the proficient levels I looked at the test map to see if there were specific standards that the group did not score well on. By looking at these groups of students and individuals, we can make changes in the way we teach or cover specific state standards. This is a valuable activity, evaluating each group as well as each student is important as it gives individualized needs to holes in skill basis as well as holes in a curriculum. Dakota Step is changing from state standards to the Common Core standards so this will be ever important and will need to continue to happen.
